Chapter One: Baby's
"Biggies" - Decorate Nursery for Less... |
|
Tip #1: Save big $$ on nursery décor with paint
Save
yourselves a ton of money by painting your baby’s nursery instead of
wallpapering it. A gallon of paint will cost you around $15 where
wallpaper can cost you 10 or 20 times more this amount. With today’s
color matching technology, most paint and home improvement stores can
custom match a color from a swatch of fabric or paint chip. Don’t
neglect considering how different faux finishes or can soften and add
variety to your baby’s nursery for about the same cost as another
gallon of paint. Many home improvement stores often provide classes on
faux finishing. You can also consider painting a mural. Both
techniques are surprising simple to learn and do—all from a can of
paint!
Included
with this tip are 9 money-saving strategies for faux painting and 9
money-saving strategies for painting a mural. If you choose to paint
your baby's nursery instead of wallpapering, you won't want to miss
these money-savers!
$ Total savings:
You can save as much as $300 or more by painting your baby’s nursery
over wallpapering it. By using sample boards first to achieve your
desired “look”, you can save even more on extra paint, glaze and
primer you may need to buy to make up for mistakes made on your baby’s
walls.
Tip #5: Save $$ on your crib purchase
Ask about the drop rail options for the crib you’ve
selected. Think about this from a functionality standpoint before
ordering and/or purchasing. Most couples will place their baby’s crib
against a wall making the dual drop rail feature pointless. If there
is an option for a single drop rail, ask if there is a cost savings to
choose this option and then determine if the savings is worth it. A
nice added bonus with single drop rail crib is additional stability
since the opposite side that does not drop remains stationary.
$ Total
savings:
The second drop rail may cost $20–$40 more.
Tip #11: Save big $$ - Create an inexpensive, portable station
Create an inexpensive changing station by buying an
inexpensive changing pad (about $35 for pad and one cover) that you
can place on top of your baby’s clothing dresser. Not only do you have
a changing station for about one tenth the price of a changing
station/dresser, you also have one that is portable! You can use this
portable changing pad in any room of your house (great if you’re still
recovering!), on a bed or floor and you can even take it to her
grandparent’s house for extended stays.
So, again, skip the whole changing station purchase and enjoy the
flexibility and savings of this more functional option instead.
$ Total savings:
You can save up to $200 with a portable changing pad over
a stationary table.
Tip #21: Make sure your stroller has three reclining levels
This is one of those “I Wish I Had Known That!” items
we wished we had known when we bought our stroller. We elected to save
the $30 difference between the stroller with two reclining positions
and the one with three reclining positions. However, this was a
mistake. Once your little one gets to about 3 or 4 months old, he’ll
want to sit semi-reclined in order to take in all the things around
him. Personally, we believe the intermediate reclining level is
invaluable and really wished we had purchased the stroller that had
it. |
