Chapter Eleven: Child Care
- Read Up on Regulations BEFORE Researching Your Options |
|
Tip #1: TRUST your instinct!!!
No matter what, your parental instinct will be your
first line of defense for narrowing down your options. If you have any
uneasiness that is not relieved by additional questioning or research,
LISTEN TO YOUR INSTINCT. It doesn’t matter what your uneasiness is and
you don’t have to make excuses for it. If something about an
individual care provider, or facility and its policies or the staff
makes you uneasy, jot down notes about it and move on to your next
selection. Once you’ve researched all your choices, refer back to your
notes. If you still have that same uneasiness, do not
dismiss that feeling. Mark that option off your list and keeping
looking until you find a care provider that meets all your needs and
rests well with your instincts.
Tip #3: Contact DSS for regulation requirements
Contact your
local DSS (Department of Social Services) offices and ask for literature
of the state regulations that care facilities must maintain BEFORE
interviewing facilities. This way you will already know the
expectations your state requires and whether the facilities you are
considering are meeting or beating those regulations. Naturally, ones
who are not meeting the regulations should automatically be eliminated
from your list.
Tip #5: Visit several options in person before choosing!
If you
choose to select a church or commercial facility, you will have
several things to evaluate before making your final selection. I’m
still amazed to learn about parents choosing a facility “sight unseen”
based on cost alone. By visiting various centers or facilities in
person, you are able to evaluate many things on many levels. You will
want to visit several facilities, even if you love the first facility
you visit, to ensure you have the ability to compare and contrast. You
will have several things you will need to evaluate while you are
interviewing a facility to determine if it makes your “cut list”. Once
you have visited various facilities, you can then narrow your list to
at least two facilities you should revisit and examine in more detail.
During your interview process, be
confident and assertive with your questions and requests for tours of
the facility. Ask to speak to the teachers that care for the infants
directly. Remember, not only are you interviewing them, but you are
also projected the image of the type of parent you are and what you
will and will not tolerate. You want each facility you visit to know
and respect that you are an involved and protective parent. The only
way you project that image is by how you present yourself while you
are interviewing the facility. This is not a time to be timid and
unorganized because your baby’s care and safety are at stake. I would
much rather be criticized for being an “anal or overprotective parent”
than an “uninvolved and uncaring parent”. Think about it—we hope this
paragraph alone speaks volumes to you.
The following two sections list
key things to look for during your initial visits. The third section
will provide you some pointers once you have narrowed your choices to
at least two facilities on how you make your final decision. If you're
considering daycare for your baby, you don't want to miss these
detailed sections that will help you make the best care choice for
your baby! |
