Chapter Nine: Recycle and Reuse - Eek! What Do I Do With All These Cans and Boxes!?!

Tip #1: Reuse formula cans

One of the greatest uses for emptied formula cans is to use them as storage containers. Some of our favorite storage uses are:

ž       Loose nuts, screws and nails—use an individual container for each type. You can place the containers on a shelf or nail/screw them onto a 2’ x 4’ piece of lumber that you can then mount to your garage wall. Or, punch a hole through one side (with a nail and hammer) so you can hang them on a wall mounted hook.

ž       Containers for loose tools such as small wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, putty knives, etc. Organize the cans as above.

ž       Containers for gardening tools such as small pruners, shovels, trowels, plant name posts, etc. Organize them as above or keep them in your garden wagon. These cans really help keep all these little things right at your fingertips. Try cutting or punching some slits (about 3”–4” inches apart) and run an old belt through them for an easy twist on a gardening tool belt.

ž       Containers for painting supplies such as brushes, paint tubes, paint sponges, etc.

ž       Container for small art supplies like wooden sticks, pom-poms, pipe cleaners, beads, glue sticks, hot glue gun sticks, etc.

ž       Loose change holder—use an individual container for each coin type to keep change organized (this works great for us!).

ž       Piggy banks for older siblings. These cans work great since the plastic lids can be taken off easily by little hands. Just be sure to file down any sharp inside edges that may cut little hands. Cover with white or patterned contact paper (you can let kids make their own decorations on the white contact paper).

ž       Plant containers for large plant containers. Drill several holes in the bottom, fill with dirt and your plant. Place several filled formula cans into a larger plant container with moss, etc. as a finishing cover-up for the cans. Or, use the cans on their own and cover them with contact paper to create a pretty plant container. Empty juice bottles work good for this too!

Betcha you’re saying, “Dang, ‘I Wish I Had Known That!’” before you threw out several of your cans. We know we did! No sense crying over thrown away cans, just start anew by now saving them.

Tip #12: Save more $$ on containers – Use wipey boxes

If you purchase new containers instead of replacement diaper wipe packs, save those containers!!! These containers work great for storing crayons, rattles and other small toys, cars, play jewelry, doll clothing and shoes, etc.

If it’s small, you can bet a diaper wipe box will make the perfect storage case. They also are easy for small children to open and they help reduce the clutter of all those small items. Cover them with white or patterned contact paper or remove their label and let your baby put stickers on them (while supervised, of course!) to give them a decorative look.
